Huis Clos/Planning Line
Mike Ricketts
Mike Ricketts work for Notes from Nowhere, Huis Clos/Planning Line, was a poster declaring the legend “Hell is Other People” in bright orange script.
The poster was distributed to the public on Saturday 19th May in Frome Town centre and at a number of other events. People were asked to erect their posters in public view – in a street facing window, on a noticeboard or in public space in some way. Over 350 posters were distributed to the public in only 3 hours and were subsequently erected all over the town.
At the bottom of the poster a phone number is printed in bold white text. There is no information on the poster to let the public know what the phone number relates to but a relationship is created between the statement on the poster and the number. Does the phone number provide an explanation or justification for the boldly negative statement? Or suggest a situation in which the statement is particularly true?
