Document and Location
Document and Location is an inter-disciplinary research group developed by academics from Fine Art, Photography and Architecture at The University of the West of England in partnership with Foreground. The group’s research will inform a public programme of discursive events, critical writing and exhibitions from Spring 2019 onwards.
Positing that location is not only defined physically and that document cannot be understood simply as record, Document and Location investigates how our understanding of place is directly formed through how locations are recorded and subsequently narrated by different disciplines.
Document and Location provides a structure through which its members as both academics and practitioners can intervene critically in recent discourses around place and space that have been prevalent across Architecture, Fine Art, Geography, and Photography. Document and Location was conceived of and is convened by Simon Morrissey, Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at UWE, Bristol and Director of Foreground. Members include Lee Elkins, Sophie Hayes, Jack Latham, Lizzie Lloyd, Sophie Warren and Jonathan Mosley, Huma Mulji, Mike Ricketts and Aaron Schuman.
The group will utilize practice-led research to re-animate and re-contextualise the document and to explore specific locations, the way in which these locations are communicated and consequently how the identity of place is created through its representation.
Document and Location’s formation and its programme of public events and publishing since 2019 has been funded by UWE’s Faculty of Arts, Creative Industries and Education.
