Foreground announce major open commission in partnership with the Science Museum Group
We are delighted to announce that Foreground are commissioning partners with the Science Museum Group for a major art commission for the National Collections Centre, the Science Museum Group’s most ambitious project for a generation. This project will create a new purpose-built home for the Science Museum Group Collection at the National Collections Centre in Wiltshire, enabling local and global audiences to explore more of the collection than ever before.
As part of the project Foreground will be working with the Science Museum Group to select an artist from an open submission to respond to and transform public access to the National Collections Centre. The four-year art commission will engage local communities in Wroughton, Swindon and Wiltshire with the National Collections Centre site and the scale and significance of the Science Museum Group Collection.
As such the selected artist will be encouraged to make community participation a significant part of their working process and help unlock this unparalleled national resource, engaging audiences with the collections ability to tell new stories about the impact the sciences have had, and continue to have, on forming the fabric of contemporary society.
Initial proposals will be accepted between 16th May and 4th August 2019, with shortlisted artists invited to the National Collections Centre for a day in October 2019. The selected artist will begin work on the commission in late 2019. The budget for the art commission is £70,000. This includes, but is not restricted to fees, concept development, project management, prototyping, materials, production, insurances, and artist accommodation and travel. The artist can also be supported to apply for further funding to expand the project.
