The Frome Independent

The Frome Independent is more than a market – it is an award winning, once a month temporary community that reclaims Frome’s high street to showcase the best independent designers, makers, producers and traders in the South West against a backdrop of culture, community and conversation.

Established in 2013 as a major place-making initiative for Foreground’s home town, The Frome Independent is a significant demonstration of our belief that culture creates communities. Conceived of as a curated, destination event that would re-invent the idea of the street market, The Frome Independent closes the whole of Frome town centre to traffic, transforming the town into a pedestrian playground that embeds social meaning back into shopping.

The Frome Independent mixes established models of the specialist street market – artisan food, garden & flowers, antiques and collectibles – with an additional focus on designers and makers and elements more familiar from festivals: live music & DJs, street food, art and events.

On the first Sunday of each month between April and December, The Frome Independent links Frome’s narrow streets of independent shops seamlessly to curated, specialist areas of the market that reclaim the high street, shopping centre and municipal car park to create a temporary community that has quickly grown to be one of the most significant elements in Frome’s social calendar.

The Frome Independent is now one of Frome’s key tourist draws and generates millions of pounds in revenue for its traders and Frome’s independent retailers, attracts over 80,000 people a year and provides a mass public platform through which Foreground can engage audiences.

And The Frome Independent continues to evolve. In 2016 we launched The Market Makers – an innovative new loyalty card scheme for visitors to secure exclusive discounts from the market’s traders and connect the market audience with Frome’s Independent businesses all year round. Join the Market Maker scheme here.

We began 2017 by launching Night School, The Frome Independent’s new monthly programme offering the opportunity to learn a range of contemporary craft skills and food processes, from blacksmithing to book-binding, printing to preserving, under the expert guidance of The Frome Independent’s regular traders.

Foreground is committed to creating collaborations that redefine roles – including our own. The Frome Independent is testament to this and demonstrates our commitment to go beyond specialist programming to create platforms where culture can genuinely create community, shape identity and significantly contribute to the cultural, economic and social wellbeing of a place.
