Michael Dean

Michael Dean’s works are often made from cast concrete or other simple materials and seek a direct physical relationship with the human body. Their deliberate surfaces, which can be mirror smooth or roughly agitated, invite touch, whilst their variation between an intimate scale and monumental scale relate them to both the body of the viewer and their immediate architectural surroundings.

His sculptural works evolve from his extensive writing; and many of his works are remodelled words in the artist’s own three-dimensional fonts. The weight of his physical sculpture is often counterbalanced by short, poetic texts in book form that balance formal linguistic manipulation with a compelling evocation of complexities of human emotion.
