Foreground brings new art to new audiences. Without boundaries.
Based in the market town of Frome, Somerset, we deliver an ambitious program that spans commissioning new temporary and permanent artworks in the diverse social and physical structures of communities, and inspire audiences of all ages through learning, participation, critical discussion and the promotion of collecting.
We do this regularly both in Frome and beyond, bringing diverse partners together to make distinctive projects happen. We commission artists without acknowledging the boundaries often placed around where art is expected to appear in society. We create projects in both public space and in galleries, commission affordable multiples to sell at markets and significant works for major collections. We create collaborations that redefine roles, which see social communities become artistic collaborators or commercial companies become commissioners funding our projects. We make new structures for new art to find its audience.
To do this we work with artists who are interested in directly engaging with the particularity of context and in bringing their art and ideas directly to audiences – whether that is in a community carnival, a corporate collection or on a canvas tote bag. We bring the work of leading international artists such as Douglas Gordon, Tue Greenfort, Roger Hiorns, Jim Isermann, Cornelia Parker, Lawrence Weiner and Richard Woods into the everyday environment of ordinary places and develop the ability of new talent to explore the inspiration of people and place, providing significant opportunities for emerging artists to create work for innovative contexts early in their careers.
We believe choices have consequences. We believe culture creates communities. We believe the audience is everyone and that art belongs everywhere. That is why we work in the way that we do.
